Wellness for fitness centres: Why recovery is part of training

A fitness centre that offers only exercise equipment solves only half the problem. Training puts strain on the body — recovery strengthens it. Anyone who offers their members a well-designed wellness area after training, which not only allows for relaxation but also active recovery of the body, creates an offering that far exceeds standard options. A hot tub, sauna, steam room and ice bath are not a luxury — they are a scientifically proven recovery system that enhances the effects of training, reduces the risk of injury and increases member loyalty in the long term.

Why recovery is the foundation of every concept

The body does not get stronger during training, but in the recovery phase that follows. During exertion, micro-tears occur in the muscles, energy reserves are depleted and the nervous system is strained. Those who actively support this recovery process train more effectively, last longer and reduce the risk of overexertion. The Global Wellness Institute has evaluated more than 300 scientific studies on hydrotherapeutic applications in its Wellness Evidence database. The results consistently show that the application of heat and water improves muscle strength, joint mobility, respiratory function and mental well-being. They accelerate rehabilitation following injuries and increase resilience to stress.

Studies show that members who regularly use the wellness area are far less likely to leave. The fitness centre is no longer seen as a place for training, but as a place of well-being – which is a crucial difference in an increasingly competitive market.

Sauna in the fitness centre

The sauna is the heart of every wellness area – including the fitness centre. Its effects on the trained body are well documented and multifaceted. The Global Wellness Institute’s Guide to Hydrothermal Baths and Wellness Development Standards (2024) describes this mechanism precisely: When exposed to heat between 70 and 100 °C, skin temperature rises, blood vessels dilate (cutaneous vasodilation), synovial fluid loses its viscosity, and skeletal muscles relax. At the same time, there is an analgesic effect — pain is reduced and pain tolerance increases. This is immediately noticeable in members following intensive strength or endurance training.

At the cardiovascular level, the sauna trains the cardiovascular system in a manner comparable to moderate physical exertion: the heart rate increases and blood circulation improves. With regular sauna visits, at least twice a week for several months, systolic blood pressure may decrease.

The immune system also benefits: during a sauna session, the number of white blood cells in the blood increases, indicating an activated immune system.

The effect on sleep is particularly important for fitness enthusiasts: the GWI Hydrothermal Guide documents that regular sauna visits prolong the deep sleep phase, the phase during which muscle fibres repair themselves, growth hormones are released and the nervous system recovers. Those who sleep more deeply recover faster. Furthermore, the sauna releases dopamine and beta-endorphins, which induce euphoria, improve mood and increase pain tolerance — to a level comparable to moderate-intensity running. Anyone who goes to the sauna after a workout leaves the fitness centre in a demonstrably better mental and physical state.

IMAGINOX offers bespoke saunas for fitness centres through its own TAO brand: Finnish saunas, combined infrared-bio saunas and spacious ceremonial saunas for groups. All TAO commercial models are handcrafted, comply with all technological, hygiene and safety regulations, and can be controlled remotely — a crucial advantage in the day-to-day running of a fitness centre, where the wellness area typically operates without dedicated staff. TAO TRUST saunas with multi-level benches are particularly suitable for groups, as is common in fitness centres.

Steam sauna

The steam sauna is the ideal complement to the sauna — and the preferred choice for many fitness centre members. The moist heat at 40–60 °C with almost 100% humidity is gentler than the dry heat of the sauna, but no less effective. The GWI Hydrothermal Guide explains: The heat in the steam sauna relaxes the smooth muscle cells in the bronchial tubes of the lungs — the airways open up, and respiratory function improves. For endurance athletes following intensive running or cycling training, this effect is immediately noticeable.

Steam saunas can be freestanding or permanently installed in existing rooms, even in hard-to-reach areas. They are often fitted with glass walls, which create an open and luxurious atmosphere. Inside, the steam generator ensures a consistent temperature and humidity. Optionally, scents such as eucalyptus or mint can be added to the steam — aromatherapy that further enhances the respiratory benefits. Lighting, a starry sky and coloured bench edges create a premium atmosphere that encourages members to use the facility regularly.

IMAGINOX manufactures steam saunas entirely under the TAO brand — in any size, with any choice of materials and in any configuration. All models are designed for continuous operation and meet the highest hygiene standards. For fitness centres wishing to offer an accessible wellness experience to a broad and diverse membership across all age groups, the steam cabin is the ideal introduction to the world of thermal treatments.

Whirlpool

The whirlpool is one of the most effective recovery products for fitness members — and at the same time, it is the most frequently used product in the wellness sector. Water temperatures between 36 and 38 °C, combined with specially positioned massage jets, relieve muscle tension, promote blood circulation in deep tissue layers and aid the removal of lactate from stressed muscles.

The GWI Hydrothermal Guide describes three physical principles that have a therapeutic effect in a whirlpool: heat transfer (vasodilation, relaxation), buoyancy (relief for joints and the spine) and hydrostatic pressure. The interaction of these three factors creates a therapeutic effect that goes far beyond mere relaxation. Gym-goers with heavy legs after a run, tense shoulders after a bench press or strained kneecaps experience direct and noticeable benefits.

IMAGINOX manufactures stainless steel whirlpools for commercial and private use — made to measure, durable and hygienically flawless. Massage jets for backrests and seats, L-shaped tubular benches, aerators, RGB LED lighting and electronic controls are directly integrated into the stainless steel structure. Stainless steel is the perfect material: non-porous, hygienic, low-maintenance and timelessly beautiful.

Regeneration system: Why heat and cold belong together

The sauna, steam room, whirlpool and ice bath only reveal their full potential when used in combination. The alternation of heat and cold — known as contrast therapy — is a fundamental principle of Nordic bathing culture and is now extensively documented by sports science and hydrotherapy research. Heat dilates blood vessels, lowers blood pressure and relaxes muscles. Cold constricts blood vessels, stimulates circulation and releases endorphins. The alternation of these two processes acts on the blood vessels like a pumping motion — and the combined effects far exceed the individual effects.

According to the GWI Hydrothermal Guide, just 30 seconds in a cold pool is enough to activate circulation and trigger the positive effects of contrast therapy. A study published in 2024 by the University of Ottawa showed that repeated exposure to cold significantly improves autophagic function at the cellular level — a cellular self-cleansing mechanism linked to longevity, resilience and the body’s ability to cope better with stress. Researchers described this effect as ‘tuning’ the body’s microscopic mechanisms.

Fitness centres that offer their members a complete circuit from saunas and steam rooms to hot tubs and ice baths — offer more than just relaxation. They offer a scientifically backed recovery programme that enhances the effects of training, promotes health and boosts well-being. That is the difference between a good fitness centre and one that truly understands its members.

Planning a wellness area in a fitness centre: what really matters

Planning a wellness area for a fitness centre starts with considering the target audience. A centre with many strength athletes and CrossFit members has different requirements to a city centre with a broad, diverse age group. Product selection — whether it be a sauna, a hot tub, an ice bath or cooling pool, a Kneipp path, a steam sauna or a Finnish sauna — should always be based on this analysis.

The choice of material is also crucial. Stainless steel is the material of choice for pools and hot tubs in fitness centres: non-porous, hygienically perfect, low-maintenance and durable. According to IMAGINOX, stainless steel products are the ideal choice for commercial use, where maximum hygiene, long service life and minimal maintenance are essential.

The technology must be designed for continuous operation: sauna controls with programmable heating times, automatic overheating protection and the option of remote maintenance; hot tub controls that can be managed via a tablet or smartphone; ice makers that produce ice continuously and require low maintenance.
